Volunteer Activities

All the work to keep the Steeplechasers operating is done by the executive officers and the committees.

Club Races

Goal

Produce high-quality races for both club members and the general running community. Participate in the Maryland RRCA Grand Prix and Women’s Distance Festival series. Donate race revenues to selected charities.

Activities

  • Promotion – develop and execute a PR strategy to promote the race
  • Registration – set up online registration system, handle mail-in and in-person registrations, prepare/distribute race bibs
  • Sponsor – develop and execute sponsorship strategy, solicit sponsors and obtain random prizes
  • Awards – purchase awards and oversee distribution
  • Premium – select, design, purchase and distribute shirt provided to registrants
  • Race Day Services – prepare for and coordinate the activities on race day, including setup of start/finish lines, race day refreshments and on-course support including water stops and course marshalls
  • Timing – provide timing and results services
  • Medical – develop and execute safety and medical plan

Communications Committee

Chair: Luanne Houck

Goal

To keep members up to date with current activities and events and to promote local races to the running community.

  • Manage the Steeplechasers Facebook and email marketing system to foster frequent and relevant communication with members
  • Manage the announcements on the Steeplechasers website
  • Manage email marketing system service to market races as contracted by local races

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Help to maintain and enhance use of social media to promote the club and recruit new members
  • Help to manage the email marketing system: coordinate with race directors, maintain distribution lists, draft content and schedule message distribution

Community Service Activities

Gettysburg Marathon Race Support (normally 4th Sunday in April)

  • Tentative, depending on whether this race is included in Grand Prix schedule
  • Organizer: Sage Norton
  • Activities:
    • Aid station support
  • Volunteer Opportunities:
    • Deliver supplies to and man aid station
    • Aid with clean-up of aid station after race

Greenbrier Trail Work Day (October)

  • Organizer: Bill Susa
  • Activities:
    • Trail maintenance
  • Volunteer Opportunities:
    • Install waterbars and other erosion mitigation
    • Digging, picking rocks, moving tree limbs, etc.
    • Sturdy shoes and gloves are recommended
    • Bring lunch and water to eat out on the trail
    • Outing will last four to six hours

JFK 50 Mile – Mile 19 Aid Station (Saturday before Thanksgiving)10374451_10152616742238003_3791392423840428366_n

  • Organizer: Paul Christiansen
  • Activities:
    • Aid station support
  • Volunteer Opportunities:
    • Prepare food for runners (cut up powerbars, bananas, etc.)
    • Replenish supplies to aid table
    • Cheer and encourage the runners
    • Aid runners in distress — possibly light first aid
    • Support activity lasts four to five hours

Competition Committee

Chairs: Shannon Matthews

Goal

To encourage fun and friendly competition and participation within our membership, with emphasis on supporting local races.

Activities

  • Determine race schedule for Grand Prix and Equalizer Series
  • Record and calculate race results
  • Receive nominations and determine end of year awards (e.g., Runner of the Year, Most Improved, etc.)
  • Purchase and present awards at the Annual Banquet

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Anyone who is interested in helping the committee is welcome to join. Best suited to individuals who are actively participating in the Grand Prix series.

Education Committee

Goal

  • Provide education opportunities for participants

Activities

  • Set up panel discussions with club members who have expertise in different topics

  • Find local experts in community for education sessions

Finance Committee

Chair: Harriet Langlois

Goal

To manage all aspects of club finances

Activities

  • Annual budget development and maintenance, including asynchronous budget proposals
  • General bookkeeping through online accounting system
  • Collect incoming mail from PO Box
  • Monthly/quarterly/annual/special-purpose reports and account reconciliation
  • Taxes and other Maryland state filing requirements
  • Insurance/Dues and other RRCA requirements
  • Financial management of race services business (scheduling, contracts, invoicing)

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Support club bookkeeping operations
  • Assist with paperwork for Maryland taxes and other state filing requirements
  • Support race services financial management (scheduling, contracts, invoicing)

Membership Committee

Chairs: Kerry McHugh and Nikki Martin

Goal

To attract and welcome new members to the club and develop ideas for new benefits to club members.

Activities

  • Administer online membership registration / renewal site
  • Answer member and prospective member questions
  • Man Expo table at Frederick Running Festival
  • Develop and execute new ideas and programs to attract and welcome new members
  • Work with other committees (Social, Communications, Training, Volunteer Appreciation, etc.) to identify ways to engage more members in the club in activities
  • Support other committees who need access to club membership information

Newsletter Committee

Chair: Roseann Abdu

Goal

To report on activities of the club and on running events in general.

Activities

  • Publish the Intervals newsletter three or four times per year

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Write articles and reports
  • Obtain articles from outside the club (e.g., orthopedist, coach)
  • Take pictures at Steeplechaser events or local races
  • Provide artwork for the newsletter

Panther Running Club

Organizer: Josh Henson

Goal

This is a running club for children in grades 2 to 5 at the Lincoln Elementary School in Frederick. The Steeplechasers, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Carroll Creek, teach these children a love of running as well as give them information about nutrition and muscle groups.

Activities

  • All exercises, drills and games come from the Panther Running Handbook, which will be supplied
  • Warm up exercises
  • Outdoor running drills and games
  • Indoor drills during inclement weather
  • Cool down exercises
  • Teaching muscle groups and nutrition

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Be a lead running coach for around 10 children
  • Assist a lead running coach
  • Be an occasional substitute for lead running coach or assistant
  • Sessions are Tuesdays and Thursdays after school, 3:45 – 5:00
  • Volunteer with one or both sessions

Public Relations Committee

Chair: Eric Cameron

Goal

To keep FSRC visible in the community.

Activities

  • Develop contacts in local media: Frederick Post, Frederick Magazine, etc.
  • Write articles for publication
  • Propose new ways to keep FSRC visible, and market FSRC’s virtues to the local community

  • Looking for someone who is knowledgeable in public relations to chair this committee of one

Race Support Committee

Chair: Mark Lawrence

Goal

To provide race services for contracted fees. To provide guidance and assistance to race directors in the planning and execution of running events in the area. To maintain club’s finish line equipment. To maintain schedule and oversee the conduct of club races.

Activities

  • Provide race support such as course marking and finish line timing for community and club events
  • Provide course marshall support for the Frederick Half Marathon and the official training runs leading up to the event

Racing Team Committee

Chair: Chris VanSant

Goal

The Steeplechasers Racing Team gives competitive members a way to band together and share their club spirit outside of other Steeplechaser activities. The team seeks to promote competitive distance running among the club and bring increased visibility of FSRC to the local running scene. The racing team will compete in races throughout the great Metropolitan DC area.

Social Committee

Goal

Provide opportunities for members to socialize outside of specific running events

Activities

  • Monthly happy hours
  • Steeplechaser tents at key races (Frederick Half Marathon, Gettysburg Marathon, Freedom’s Run)
  • Summer picnic
  • Winter breakfast runs
  • Annual running celebration/banquet

Summer Decathlon

Organizer: Tim O’Keefe

Goal

The Summer Decathlon provides an opportunity for runners to compete at whatever level they desire in an evening series of 10 track based events. As an added incentive, an age graded competition is employed.

Activities

  • A one mile self timed fun run
  • An age graded “decathlon” event ranging from 200 meters to 2 miles
  • A short kids fun run with treats at the finish
  • A longer relay or track event with fun “prizes” for top finishers
  • A family friendly atmosphere

  • Directing one of the events by purchasing relay prizes and being in charge of the evenings events
  • Organizing the event finishes by assigning timers and collecting finisher cards
  • Timing each event using the Chronomix and race clock
  • Creating a relay or track event that helps teach runners a particular aspect of running technique
  • Organizing an ice cream social for one of the post race treats
  • Transporting necessary race materials for each event

Technology Committee

Chair: Lou King

Goal

To design and maintain steeplechasers.org web site. To simplify volunteer activities through automation.

Activities

  • Maintain and improve steeplechasers.org web site design
  • Propose and implement automation to streamline volunteer activities, such as competition, membership, etc.
  • Maintain steeplechasers.org web site content

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Support web site design and automation activities using web design languages (e.g., html, php, javascript)
  • Update web content – does not require as much technical ability as web design

Training Committee

Chair: Billy Clem

Goal

To provide opportunities for members to train together for goal races of varying distances

Activities

  • Create training programs for different race distances
  • Create routes of varying distances and levels of ability

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Develop routes and put out aid for training runs
  • Be a group leader for novice runners
