Summer Decathlon

2017 Summer Decathlon Standings

On 10 Wednesday evenings each summer we meet at Frederick High School

NOTE: for 2017 FHS track is under construction — venue for this summer is Brunswick High School, 101 Cummings Dr, Brunswick, MD

at 6:15 for the Summer Decathlon series. This is a family friendly event!

Format

Each evening you can expect the following:

  • sign-in (no preregistration required)
  • 1600m warmup (starts at 6:30)
  • main event (200m through 2 mi, different event each week) (timed)
    • the main event is run in heats
    • heat placement is voluntary – runners decide roughly where they fit based on expected pace
    • size of each heat is limited, with volunteer race director(s) helping runners to adjust placement based on the size of the field
    • the number of heats depends on the distance of the race, and the number of people who come on a given evening
    • an official timer determines the times of each runner to cross the finish line using timing equipment
    • volunteers write on a card the name and age of each runner and gets the time from the official timer
    • volunteers are assigned by place, i.e., a volunteer might hold two cards, for 3rd and 4th place, so the volunteer remembers who passed finish line 3rd and 4th, and get their names/ages, then add the times from the official timer once all the runners have crossed
  • kids 100m dash (untimed) – freeze pops for the kids at the end
  • fun relay (optional) (generally untimed)

Results from the main event are “age grade” scored, which allows men or women of (e.g.) 25 to compete with men or women age (e.g.) 70. Points are awarded to each individual depending on the number of people who were there that evening within each gender, and their placement after age grade scoring. E.g., if 15 women came for 1600m event, first place is awarded 150 points, 2nd place 140 points, etc.

 Rules

  • Series consists of the 10 Races identified below to the extent those events are held.
  • In a given race, the runner’s time used for scoring is their “age graded result” determined by their age on race day and their actual time. See Age Grading for more information.
  • All races count toward scoring.
  • Five races must be run to qualify for an award.
  • Decathlon participation is open to paid FSRC members (free) and non-members ($5 fee per race).
  • Score for a given race is based on the number of participants within each gender, multiplied by 10. For instance, if there were 27 women for this week’s race, the first place woman would receive 270 points, 2nd place 260 points, etc., down to 10 points for the last place woman.
  • In the event of a tie between runners in a race, the points will be split between the runners.

 Awards

Awards are given to club members at the FSRC End-of-Summer Picnic for the top 10 finishers for each gender.
