Below is a race recap from Aidan Callery, editor of the Steeplechasers’ Newsletter.

The Snack Town Half Marathon in Hanover, PA, which took place on a rainy October 7, was a great low-
key, and challenging race. The wet trudge was made even more enjoyable by the presence of my family- my wife Kari, and our two children, Áine and Aobihín, who came to watch and support me. Given this was a very small race, it was refreshing to avoid the usual traffic and parking challenges. The one minor downside is the lack of a mail option for packet collection, but that was just a very slight inconvenience.

The race route took 250 or so runners through the charming streets of Hanover, showcasing the town’s
historical landmarks and snack factories. Miles 2-4 brought us through beautiful farmland and scenic
views in the Hershey Heights area. We then enjoyed a long downhill and crossed over into the industrial
park ultimately leading them to Hanover’s newly renovated rail trail. The end of the course is flat, fast,
and loops through tree-lined streets to end back at the YMCA.

Despite the weather, Kari, Áine, and Aobihín stood along the course, cheering loudly to boost my spirits.
One good thing about the second half of the course is that it has several loops, so it’s easy for spectators
to move around and see runners at different vantage points.

The course featured some challenging hills, but fortunately, most of the main inclines were in the first
third of the race. The overall elevation change was very manageable at 504 feet. If you are looking for a
PB or are just looking for a fast half-marathon this is a good candidate.

After 1 hour and 41 minutes, I crossed the finish line, soaked from head to toe but very happy with my
time. My family was there to celebrate with me, their smiles and cheers making the rainy finish all the
more meaningful. I quickly stretched and rehydrated before grabbing a tasty, much-needed breakfast
sandwich. The warm sausage, egg, and melted cheese were just what I needed!

Overall, the Snack Town half was a great experience and a race I would happily do again!
